Friday 22nd May 2020

It's Friday and I've finally finished my book.  Here are the front and back covers. This took all morning!  I've only printed one copy for my neighbour.  My mum won't let me print anymore because the printer will run out of ink!

After lunch, I did the Maths challenge which was really hard and then I did Mr Barton's lesson on converting units of volume. I also did a Maths test = I got 28/35.

I also watched the Oak National assembly with Stuart Pearce.  I learned that you shouldn't give up.

I then had to do some dance because I have a zoom lessons tomorrow and I need to learn a routine.

Thursday 21st May 2020

Another sunny day - lots of bouncing in between lessons!  I did my White Rose Maths which was on subtracting fractions and I did Mr Barton's Maths lesson on volume and cubic numbers. I then did the English lesson on cohesive features in instructions.  I had to spot:
  • adverbials
  • conjunctions
  • Pronouns & synonyms
I then did lots of research on the Iroquois confederacy.  This was really interesting.  I watched some really good videos about where they live and what they believe in.  I found a very good video about how they had clan mothers and ran meetings.  I put all of my notes in a powerpoint presentation.

We then made some cornflake cakes.  I followed the recipe on the BBC website. The best part was licking the spoon after measuring the the golden syrup!  Here is the link to recipe.

Chocolate Cornflake Cakes.

I then spent the rest of the afternoon drafting the final chapter sof my story!  I'm really pleased with it and I can't wait to reveal it - Tomorrow!!!

Wednesday 20th May 2020

It's a sunny Wednesday!  It's National 'Thank a Teacher Day' today and I want to thank all the teachers at my school.  I am missing them all.  I also thanked my mum because she's been planning work for me too.

I did Maths first.  White Rose Maths was on adding fractions (these were harder today) and Oak National was on estimating volume.

I then did the English lessons.  I read instructions on how to catch a dragon and then had to identify the features used.
The 4 areas today were:

I then had to prepare a science demonstration - all to be revealed later!  While I was waiting,  I started my first draft of the story.  I made the mistake of telling my mum it was set in the 1950s and now when I read parts to her she picks me up for not using the appropriate language!  I wrote the first 3 chapters and then went through to see if I could make any improvements.  My mum has started to type my draft up for me.

I then did the science lesson about Weathering and Erosion.  I've made a demonstration below which you can see:

Tuesday 19th May 2020

I did the White Rose Maths lesson on adding Fractions.  I was really tired so we did the Oak National Spanish lesson with Miss Harrison which always livens me up!  I remembered my alphabet, numbers and days of the week.  Then I learned how to answer the question 'Comos estas?'.

Today, I said 'Estoy cansada'.

After a break we did the Oak National Maths lesson with Mr Barton. It was a recap of cubed numbers.  I completed the table.

I then did the English lesson.  We looked at some instructions on how to avoid being chased by some strange creatures.  I learned some new words:

Dishevelled
adjective  - (of a person's hair, clothes, or appearance) untidy; disordered.
Sporadically
adverb - occasionally or at irregular intervals.
Outlandish
adjective - looking or sounding bizarre or unfamiliar.
I then did some more planning on my story for Mr A.  It's going very well.  My mum asked me to plan out two characters. I had to explain their INNER (thoughts, values, personality), OUTER (appearance, behaviour) and CONTEXT (back story).  I planned Yuri, a young amateur detective and Martha, a jealous, rich brat.  Here is my work:

My mum then explained the pyramid structure to help me plan the structure of my story.  We plotted it first for the story of JAWS and The Princess and the Pea.  I then followed the stages to plot my story.  Here is my story pyramid. I'm going to plan 2 more characters because I enjoyed doing this.

I also did my science work set by Mr A.  This was really interesting. I watched lots of videos and made notes.  I learned about:
  • Adaptation
  • Inheritance
  • Evolution
I made a sheet and used Ziggy as an example!

I have started reading The illustrated Mum by Jacqueline Wilson.  I've still a couple of chapters on Little Women and Second Form at Malory Towers but my mum has got free access to the digital book So I did some quiet reading at the end of my lessons.

Monday 18th May 2020

Monday again!  I started with a reading paper.  I had to read about looking after rabbits, school uniform, Gelert and a poem about a boy wanting a bike.  I then answered questions.  I was really pleased as I got 43 out of 50.  The piece I most enjoyed reading was the story of Gelert.  You can read about the legend here:

I then did the White Rose Maths lesson on adding and subtracting fractions followed by the Oak National lesson on measuring volumes. I have to remember to:

  1. Check the unit
  2. Work out the interval
  3. Find the measurement

I then did the Oak National English lesson on Instructions.  I read the instructions for a Morrison Shelter and answered the questions.

I also did the RE lesson with Miss Read.  Today I learned about the life of Siddharthu Gautama 'the enlightened one'.  Here is my story map of his life. He started as a Prince but on seeing the suffering outside he rejected his lifestyle and meditated to become awake.

This is my story map:

Mr A has set us the task of writing a story.  I like this task and I have started to plan my ideas.

I watched all of the videos about setting, characters and inference and I drew a mind map of my initial thoughts and ideas for my story.  Here is my mind map:

I am going to do planning everyday but I am not going to tell you!  You will have to wait for the finished story.  I have created a scrapbook for my teacher so he can read my plans.

I finished the day by reading some more of Little Women.  I've nearly finished.

Friday 15th May 2020

So we made Key Lime Pie.  Looks good doesn't it?  But it was way too limey and sweet.  The first bite tasted good, the second bite was ok but by the fifth bite I'd had enough.  My Mum ate her piece but wasn't keen and dad ate 2 pieces.  He regretted it later when he was in a sugar food coma!

Then we did Mr Barton's Maths lesson.  We were checking Da Vinci's ideas.
I had to measure myself and fill in the table.  The only measurements that worked for me were the length of my middle finger to the base of the hand was roughly a tenth of my height.  Also the width of my shoulders was a quarter of my height.
I then watched the Oak National Assembly with Helen Sharman.  It was really interesting to listen to her and her descriptions of travelling in space.  I would love to be an astronaut and see Earth from space.  She shows that you have to try otherwise you will never achieve.  She didn't think she would be picked but she gave it a go!

I then did the science lesson on identifying rocks.  I had to draw the table and make notes on the rocks Miss Simkin showed.  I had to focus on the 4 main characteristics of rocks:
  1. Colour
  2. Grain size
  3. Patterns
  4. Texture
I made notes and then I was able to match my notes to the descriptions of the rocks.  Miss Simkin then showed us how to make an identification key.  I liked doing this as it was just like the questionnaires I get in the Beano! Here is my identification key:

We then read a version of Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare.  We watched the summary and  looked at the characters.  I thought it was very funny.  I liked it when Lysander is chasing Helena in the woods.  I thought it was funny when they were all arguing.  My favourite character was Hermia because she is fiesty. My favourite in the fairy kingdom is Puck because he causes all of mischief. Ziggy enjoyed it too!  We then made some paper fairies of Titania, Oberon and Puck!

Thursday 14th May 2020

My mum had a meeting this morning so she left me 2 SATS papers to do.

I did MATHS first and got 28/35 I then did the SPaG and got 44/50.  When Mum had finished her meeting she went through the answers with me.

We then made a Key Lime Pie, which was one of the desserts on my American Diner Menu.  This is the recipe we followed:

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/key-lime-pie-1

It is supposed to chill overnight in the fridge but I don't think I can wait!  I will post photos tomorrow.

After lunch, I did the White Rose Maths for school on ordering fractions and then did my English and Maths lessons online.

The Maths lesson was on converting pounds and kilograms and the English lesson was on formal and informal writing.

I then went outside to finish my reading book and to bounce on the trampoline!

Wednesday 13th May 2020

White Rose Maths was on improper fractions and then I did Mr Barton's lesson on converting kg in tonnes.

I then did the oak national lesson with Mr Emmerson and we looked at the key features of diary writing.  I had to read the example and pick out the features. These included:
  • first person
  • date
  • contractions
  • informal
  • exclamation marks
  • rhetorical questions
  • emotions and feelings
I then looked at the work set by Mr A.  This was on Facts and Opinions.  I watched the cartoon and answered the questions.  My mum then gave me the task of reading 2 short newspaper reports.  I underlined the facts and opinions.  I noticed one was biased and had lots of opinions.  The other had more facts and was a more objective view.

I then read the sports report.  This was a fairly balanced report of a football match.  My mum asked me to change this and to write a very biased version of it.  Here is my biased report that contains lots of opinions.

I then did a science lesson on light.  I learned how light is a form of energy that transmits waves in straight lines.  Dark is the absence of light.  A shadow is made when the light cannot pass through the object.  Key words are:
  • Opaque - NO light can pass through
  • Translucent - SOME light can pass through
  • Transparent - ALL light can pass through
I then did an experiment.  I picked 3 objects and used the lamp as a light source.  I then put the object in front of the light source and made notes on what I saw like if there was a shadow etc.  Here are my results:

I then researched American food.  I looked at the website below and picked out foods I would like on my American Style Diner Menu.

Here is my menu.  I really want to run my own restaurant now after doing this!

Tuesday 12th May 2020

This morning I did Maths with Mr Barton which was all about reading weights and scales. I had to write my answers in both kg and g.  I then did the White Rose Maths lesson which was about equivalent fraction.

I then did some English with Mr Emmerson. We looked at an extract from The Diary of Anne Frank and I had to answer the fact retrieval questions.

Then I has Spanish with Miss Harrision.  This is one of my favourite lessons of the week.  I have learned the alphabet, numbers, months and today we did days of the week so I now know how to say the date in Spanish.

I then made an animation using Powtoon.  I learned to choose a template, change the text and swap the characters.  It's fun and good because you can make little videos.  To get the good characters and images you have to pay but we just used the free ones.

We then revised relative clauses and read the poem from yesterday again.  My task was design my own superhero and to make notes. Here are my notes:

I then had to draw and write some sentences about them making sure I used some relative clauses.

I am really pleased with my superhero and I think she would make a good film!

Monday 11th May 2020

I had a good rest over the weekend.  On Friday, we put up our homemade bunting and played Yahtzee in the campervan like we were away. On Saturday we had a picnic in the garden and yesterday I just chilled with my devices and watched TV.  We watched The Return of the Pink Panther which was hilarious.

Back to homeschool this morning and I did the oak national maths lesson with Mr Barton.  I had to convert miles into km and km into miles.

I also did 2 English lessons.  One was set by my teacher and it was all about word meanings.  The other lesson was great because it was on Diary writing and the example they used was Dork Diaries and I have read all of these books.  My mum said this would be my specialist subject on Mastermind!  It was an extract and I had to answer the questions.

I then did the White Rose Maths set by Mr A.  It was about how to calculate areas of rectangles.

We then read a poem called 'Superheroes I could have been' by Roger Stevens.  It was really funny and clever. It is about how all the best superheroes had been taken and only the rubbish ones were left.  I picked Captain Apathy and created his backstory, nemesis, sidekick, costume, super powers etc.  Here is my design and ideas:

We then watched Spiderman Homecoming and I wrote a film review.

Tomorrow I am going to create my own superhero and I already have a few ideas...

Thursday 7th May 2020

This morning I did my White Rose Maths worksheets and the Online lesson with Mr Barton.  They were both about perimeters and finding missing values.

Then  my mum went through a presentation about VE Day.  I looked at old camera footage of people in London. They were celebrating the end of the war.  I then imagined that I was in London on VE day and I wrote a letter back home to my family about what I saw.  Here is my work:

People made their own decorations for parties out of recycled materials.  I've made some decorations for our window out of an old pair of Harry Potter pyjamas.

I also did an Oak academy history lesson with Miss Reid about Elizabeth I.  I learnt about how Edward VI succeeded Henry VIII when he was 9 years old.

When Edward was ill he was protestant and didn't want his half sister Mary to be the Queen, as she was catholic.  He said Lady Jane Grey was to be queen when he died.  He died when he was 15 and Lady Jane Grey ruled for only 9 days before Mary had her beheaded and became queen.

She was married to King Phillip II of Spain. When Mary I died Elizabeth I became queen and Phillip proposed to her!  She rejected him.  Phillip then sent his armada but they lost.  Elizabeth gave a great speech about being as brave as a king.

After lunch we looked at some more persuasive features such as lists of three, modal verbs and imperative verbs and rhetorical questions.  We started to look at how we can use semi-colons when writing a list of three.

I then did my stretches for splits.

Wednesday 6th May 2020

Another gorgeous day today but I had to do my Maths before I could go outside - boo.  First I did the White Rose Maths Worksheets for Mr Atkinson.  I got them all right for the first time this week!  I then did Mr Barton's Maths lesson and I had to convert mm, cm, metres and kilometres.

After a break for bouncing I did some research into Native American symbols and languages.  I read a Hopi tribe children's story and then drew the symbols to help tell the tale of The Kind Hawk.  Here is my storyboard.

This afternoon I completed Miss Simkin's science lesson on Sedimentary Rock & Fossils.  I made lots of notes and drew diagrams of the 3 stages of sedimentary rock formation.  The 3 stages are:
  1. Sedimentation
  2. Compaction
  3. Cementation
I then did my own demonstrations using crayons, bread and gummy bears!

I have ballet and national lessons later on.

Tuesday el Cinco de Mayo

The first lesson I did was work for Mr Atkinson.  I looked at electricity and the materials which are conductors and insulators.  I had to match the material with the object and say whether I though it would conduct electricity.  I watched the bizesize videos and completed the task then I posted my answer.  I also answered some questions about why you shouldn't use a knife to get toast out of the toaster and why you shouldn't touch anyone who had been electrocuted.

My next lesson was Maths with Mr Barton.  We did some more work on maths problems which used a mixture of seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks.

Next, I did the Spanish lesson with Senorita Harrison.  The date is the 5th May.  In Mexico this is is an important day.  Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory against French forces led by Emperor Napoleon III in the Battle of Puebla, which took place on 5 May 1862.

In the Spanish lesson today we learned our numbers up to 31 and the Months of the year so we could answer the question Cuando es tu cumpleanos?

I would say:

Mi cumpleanos es el veinteocho de enero.

I enjoy the Spanish lessons because my mum's accent makes me laugh!

I then did the White Rose Maths worksheet and watched the Picture News assembly about Toys. I chatted with my mum about Toys and decided to design a toy that could grow with you and still be useful when you are grown up!  Here is my idea:

I think it's good because you can still cuddle and get some comfort with a pillow but it doesn't seem babyish.  It can also make your room look nice.

I then had the idea to do a Dragon's Den pitch to my mum.  I don't think mum was impressed with my pricing!

I then went in the garden to read my book.  I have Tap and Modern dance lessons on ZOOM later.
