Monday 1st June 2020

Start of a new month and the start of homeschooling.  Fist lesson of the day was PSHE.  I watched the lesson on Oak National with Mr Jamil.  He was reminding us how important it was to wash your hands.  I recreated his demonstration.

Then I did MATHS with Mr Barton.  It was decimals - urgh!  Death by decimals again!!  Will it ever end?  It was quite easy to do.

I then did the RE lesson with Miss Reid.  This was on why Buddhists meditate.  I like the RE lessons.  We then did some meditation and it did make me feel sleepy so I think I will do this at night.  My mum says she will do it in the morning to keep her calm and to stop her craving crisps and chocolate!

I then did some SCIENCE which was set by Mr Atkinson.  The topic was WIND RESISTANCE in sport.  I watched the video on cycling and then I picked to research how important friction and air resistance is in downhill skiing - one of my favourite sports.  I am desperate to go skiing again!                                                                      The first thing I did was to learn about FRICTION.

AIR RESISTANCE is a form of friction.  This is a good video which explains it.

I tested this by taking two exact pieces of paper with the same mass.  I scrunched one into a ball. When I dropped them the one scrunched up dropped quicker.  This is because there was less air resistance.  It had a more streamlined shape.

I then researched how important this was in skiiing.  I looked at lots of videos about how how skiers going downhill go in a crouched position so they go faster.  They also have equipment to make them go faster such as bent poles which they hold close to their bodies, specially designed helmets and ski suits which are tested in wind tunnels!  Professional skiers will also try to keep their skis pointed down the slope and parallel.  They may also wax their skis so there is less friction with the snow.  I labelled the pictures to show how the bottom skier will be much quicker.

I then did the Oak National ENGLISH lesson.  This was about comparing two versions of Little Red Riding Hood.  I read the alternative ending and then answered the questions.  I have to remember that when the question says compare that I look at similarities and differences.  I then read another chapter of Little Women.

  1. Welcome back Seren! I've missed your blog. Love watching your experiments and particularly enjoyed the video on wind resistance. Very interesting.
